- Angular crushed rock
Tip a load onto the driveway and the first thing you notice about 3/4" drain rock is what is missing. There is no dust cloud, no gray film on your boots, nothing packing into the treads. The pieces rattle rather than thud, and you can see daylight into the pile. That empty space between the stones is the product. It is what carries water out of a trench in January, and it is why the same pile feels loose and unwilling underfoot in August.
Angular faces and open space, read from the pile
The stone runs 3/16 inch to 1 inch in a #57 grading, and it is crushed rather than tumbled, so every piece has flat faces and sharp corners. Pick up a handful and the pieces wedge against each other instead of rolling apart. That is the behavior you want in a trench wall or behind a retaining wall, where the stone has to stay put while water moves through it.
What the grading leaves out matters as much as the size. A #57 grading is open, meaning the small material that would fill the gaps has been screened off. Compare it with a scoop of Class 2 Base in the same hand: the base rock leaves a print, and the drain rock does not. One is built to lock up and carry a wheel; the other is built to let a winter storm pass through it.
Where 3/4" drain rock does its real work on clay ground
Perimeter and curtain drains are the obvious home for it. Along the Coast Ranges and through the inland valleys, heavy clay holds water at the surface after a storm, and a trench of clean stone gives that water somewhere to collect and a route to leave. The same logic applies behind a retaining wall, where the stone relieves the water pressure that builds against the back of the wall through the wet months rather than letting it push.
An RV or boat parking pad is the third job worth naming. On a flat lot where water ponds because there is nowhere for it to soak, a pad of angular stone drains under the tires instead of holding a puddle against them, and the sharp faces knit together enough to stay put under a slow turn. Build it over a compacted base if the ground is soft. The stone is also used as coarse aggregate in concrete work, which is why a contractor pouring a slab and running a drain the same week will sometimes order one material for both.
Raised beds and play areas: two places it disappoints
Raised vegetable beds come up constantly, usually as a drainage layer in the bottom. Clean stone under soil does not reliably improve drainage; it creates a boundary that water sits above until the soil is saturated, and roots reach it and stop. Fill the bed with Garden Soil or Top Soil and put the drainage under or beside the bed, not inside it.
A playground surface is the second. Angular 3/4 inch stone is unpleasant to kneel on, it does not compact into anything stable underfoot, and it works its way into shoes. Rounded Pea Gravel or washed Mason Sand is the material people are actually reaching for when they ask.
Depth set by an atmospheric river, not a drizzle
Most of the year's rain arrives in a few large storms, so size the stone layer for the day the gutters overflow rather than for an average week. A perimeter drain is generally dug deep enough to sit below the ground you are trying to keep dry, with stone wrapped around the pipe and carried up the trench so surface water can reach it. Behind a wall, the stone column runs from the footing up towards grade, with the top sealed off so soil does not wash down into it.
For a free-draining pad, the stone is a surface course over a compacted base, and the calculator on this site treats landscape layers at around 2 inches and vehicle areas at around 4. Wrap trench stone and wall backfill in a filter fabric. It is the single decision that separates a drain still running in ten years from one that quietly silts up.
Sizing a 32 by 12 boat pad and a 60 foot drain line
A boat parking pad 32 feet by 12 feet is 384 square feet. At 4 inches, that is 384 x 0.333, or 128 cubic feet, which divided by 27 gives 4.7 cubic yards. The 5 percent allowance for spillage that the stone calculator adds by default takes it to about 5 cubic yards.
A 60 foot drain line dug a foot wide and 18 inches deep is 60 x 1 x 1.5, or 90 cubic feet, which is 3.3 cubic yards. A 4 inch pipe running the length of it displaces roughly a fifth of a cubic yard, so it barely moves the number. Order by the ton and let the stone calculator convert the volume using the density held for this material; the arithmetic above is there so you can tell when a figure looks wrong. For a sense of the weight, this site publishes about 2,800 lb per cubic yard for #57 stone, roughly 1.4 tons per yard, which makes the 5 yard pad approximately 7 tons and the 3.3 yard drain line about 4.6.
Stone that shares a site with it
Where a finer bed is wanted under pipe, 3/8" Crushed Stone fits the same drainage logic at a smaller size, and #67 Stone covers similar work slightly smaller again. For a drive surface rather than a drain, 3/4" Crushed Stone is the one people compare against.
