Size and Grading

Size
Approximately 3/8 inch
Type
Angular crushed stone

In a yard that has given up its lawn, the last decision is usually the one about what people actually stand on. The base is in, the grading is right, and what is missing is a top layer that feels reasonable underfoot and still looks deliberate in August when nothing else in the garden does. 3/8" crushed stone is what that layer is most often ordered for here: a small, angular stone spread over prepared ground as the finish, rather than as the structure below it.

Spec in one line, and what is deliberately absent from it

The size is approximately 3/8 inch and the type is angular crushed stone. That is the whole specification, and the short version tells you something. This is a sized product rather than a numbered grading, so it is not carrying the range of smaller pieces and dust that a graded mix relies on to lock up.

The consequences are worth knowing before you order. It compacts into a reasonably dense, even layer because the angular faces wedge together, but it will never bind into the near-solid crust that a fines-bearing material gives you. It is gentler underfoot than anything coarser, which is why it goes down where people walk barefoot. And it sits in the middle of the shelf: finer than a drive surfacing gravel, coarser than Decomposed Granite, and without the packed-joint behavior of #89 Crushed Stone or the wide-open drainage voids of #8 Crushed Stone.

Three side-yard jobs where 3/8" crushed stone is the last layer down

A turnaround or parking pad is the first, and the important word is dressing. Over a compacted Class 2 Base that is doing the structural work, a thin course of this stone settles into the openings in the base and gives a more even top surface than the base alone. It will scatter under a wheel that turns hard on the spot, so it suits a pad that is parked on more than it is maneuvered on.

A side-yard dog run is the second, and here the stone is closer to being the whole build. Fabric over the native soil, a firmed subgrade, then the stone at a depth that stays put underfoot. The small size is the selling point: it is kinder on paws than a coarse aggregate, and it hoses down without turning to paste the way a fines-bearing material does.

A hot tub pad is the third, and it is the one where this stone is a finish and never the support. The pad itself has to be built for the load and for where the water goes, which is a base and open-graded stone question. This material goes on as the surround and the walking surface once that is done, because it is what you actually want to step onto with wet feet.

Beyond those three, the two quiet uses are utility bedding, where the consistent small size settles neatly around pipe and conduit, and decorative cover in beds, tree rings and borders, where the angular texture gives a tidier look than a rounded stone.

Dry-season dust, winter runoff and a stone with almost no fines

Through the long dry months this layer behaves well. There is very little dust in it to lift, which is its main advantage over a screenings surface in a yard where people sit outside, and the angular faces keep it from shifting the way rounded stone does.

The wet season is where the planning shows. Water passes down through the layer readily, and the question is always what happens next. On the sandy coastal and desert soils it soaks away. On the clay through the Coast Range valleys and the Southern California basins, and over the cemented hardpan in parts of the Central Valley, it reaches the bottom of the stone and stops. A finish layer over standing water gets soft spots and starts sinking into the subgrade.

Two things prevent that and both sit below this stone. Build a fall into the prepared surface so most water crosses and leaves at an edge, and where a site genuinely ponds every winter, give it a drainage detail of its own using a washed open stone. This material is not that detail. It is what covers the finished job.

Sizing a 22 by 20 turnaround and a side-yard run

Take a turnaround as an example, 22 feet by 20 feet, dressed at 2 inches over an existing compacted base. That is 440 square feet. Two inches is 0.1667 of a foot, so 440 multiplied by 0.1667 comes to 73 cubic feet, and 73 divided by 27 is 2.7 cubic yards. With the 5 percent the stone calculator adds by default that is about 2.8.

The dog run alongside it, 38 feet by 6 feet at 3 inches, is 228 square feet. Three inches is a quarter of a foot, so 228 multiplied by 0.25 is 57 cubic feet, which is 2.1 cubic yards, or about 2.2 with the allowance.

Orders are in tons, so the stone calculator converts those figures using the density it holds for this material. Do the volume arithmetic yourself before you order, because depth is where the money goes: an extra inch across that turnaround is another 1.4 cubic yards for no improvement whatsoever in how it performs. This site publishes about 2,800 lb per cubic yard for 3/8 inch chips, roughly 1.4 tons per yard, so the 2.7 yard turnaround is approximately 3.8 tons and the 2.1 yard dog run about 2.9.

Before the truck arrives on a hillside lot

Quantity and a delivery date are both set on this page, and delivery is arranged at checkout from your ZIP code. Three things make the day go smoothly.

Have the layer below finished first. This stone is a dressing, so the base wants to be compacted and graded before it arrives, otherwise you handle the same material twice and mix soil into it in the process.

Pick the tipping point for the truck rather than for yourself. It needs firm, level ground, clear headroom and a route out that does not involve reversing blind down a narrow lane. On the hillside lots this site's readers often work on, the only flat ground can be at the wrong end of the property, so walk it before ordering and decide whether wheelbarrowing uphill or a longer carry downhill is the lesser problem.

Board the downhill side of the heap if there is any fall at it. Small angular stone travels less than a rounded one but it still finds its way into a lawn, and picking it back out is slower than laying the whole surface. If access is the thing you are unsure about, raise it through the contact page before the order, and have a look at the wider range if base material is going on the same delivery.
