Push a hand into a pile of river cobble and nothing catches. The stones are smooth and rounded, they shift and settle around your fingers, and they come out clean. Tip them into a bed and they find their own level rather than staying where the shovel put them. That rolling quality is the trade this material asks you to make, and once you understand it, most decisions about where to use it answer themselves.

What does 1 to 3 inch cobble look like once it is down?

Pieces run between 1 and 3 inches, so a bed of it reads as texture rather than as a flat surface. The color is a mix, not a single tone: tans, grays and browns with occasional reds running through, which is why it settles comfortably beside stucco, timber and planting instead of shouting over them. Because the pieces are rounded rather than crushed, light catches them in curves and the bed looks softer than an equivalent depth of angular stone.

Judge it as a mass and not as a handful. A single stone tells you little; two inches of it across a bed under afternoon sun tells you everything. Dust from a long dry season mutes the color, and a hose brings it straight back.

Can river cobble go under a paver patio, or only around one?

Around one. Rounded stone is the wrong material below pavers, because it rolls under load and gives up the flat, stable plane that paving needs. A patio wants a compacted Class 2 Base course and a thin screeded bed of Mason Sand on top of it.

Where cobble earns its place is at the edges: as the border strip between paving and planting, as the ground cover in the beds that frame the patio, and as the surface in a side return where nothing is going to grow well anyway. It is also a working choice under downspouts, where roof water leaves fast and would cut a channel through soil or wash bark away in a single storm.

How do I build a dry creek bed that still works in a January storm?

Most of the year a dry creek is a design feature. For a few days a winter it is a drain, and building it for that handful of days is what separates one that still looks right in March from one that has spilled across the lawn.

Shape the channel first, following the route water already takes across the yard, and give it a consistent fall towards somewhere you are happy for the water to end up. Dig the center lower than the banks rather than laying stone on flat ground. Lay landscape fabric, then set the largest stones along the outside of the bends and at any point where the flow will be squeezed, since that is where scour happens. Fill the channel bed with cobble and let the size vary, because an unsorted bed looks natural and locks together better than a graded one. Where a channel drops steeply or discharges onto bare ground, heavier stone such as RipRap or Large River Rock belongs at that point instead.

Will it stay put around a fire pit where people walk?

Partly, and it is worth knowing the limits before you commit. A ring of cobble around a fire pit gives you a non-organic surface at the one spot in the garden where organic mulch is a poor idea, and it stays looking the same year after year. But rounded 1 to 3 inch stone is loose underfoot. Chairs rock on it, and it migrates towards wherever people habitually walk.

The usual answer is to pave the seating circle itself, in flagstone or pavers set on a compacted base, and to run the cobble as a band outside that, contained by steel edging or a paver soldier course. Keep the cobble layer shallower where feet cross it and deeper where it is purely visual.

How much do I need for a 30 foot creek and a 9 foot fire pit ring?

A dry creek 30 feet long and averaging 4 feet across covers 120 square feet. At 4 inches deep that is 120 x 0.333, or 40 cubic feet, which divided by 27 is 1.5 cubic yards. Add extra if you are building up banks or setting larger feature stones.

For the fire pit, a 9 foot outer circle has an area of about 64 square feet, and taking out a 4 foot paved pit in the middle at roughly 13 square feet leaves a ring of about 51 square feet. Three inches deep gives 51 x 0.25, or 12.8 cubic feet, which is 0.5 of a cubic yard. The two together come to about 2 cubic yards. Stone is ordered by the ton, and the gravel calculator converts volume into weight using the density held for this material. This site publishes about 2,700 lb per cubic yard for 1 to 3 inch river rock, roughly 1.35 tons per yard, so those 2 yards come to approximately 2.7 tons.

What does the truck need to reach a hillside back yard?

More room than people expect. Quantity and a delivery date are chosen here, and delivery is arranged at checkout from your ZIP code, but the load still has to be tipped somewhere firm, level and clear, with nothing overhead. On a sloping lot that usually means the driveway, and the stone then travels by wheelbarrow. Round stone runs downhill given any encouragement, so board off the low side of the pile before the truck arrives. If access is genuinely tight, raise it through the contact page first rather than on the day.
